They were performed by the common people in such religious festivals as Easter and Corpus Christi. Originally they were a means whereby the clergy tried to educate the illiterate masses in the story of the Christian faith, in Latin, in the church.
But the laity gradually assumed responsibility for them and they moved outside sanctified ground and into the vernacular world outside, the streets, squares and market places of the towns. Perhaps the language and action were too coarse, irreligious and earthy for the clerics?
They were called Mysteries, because they were performed by the craft guilds who were possessive of their rights and practices, each guild assuming responsibility for a biblical event with which they shared some affinity. Hence it may be the Noye's Fludde might be boatbuilders or boatmen. The stories covered the entire span of Creation, life of Christ up to Judgement and were consequently called Cycles as in the York, Chester or Wakefield Mystery Cycles. The Chester Cycle comprised 24 plays and took three days to perform and the York Cycle began at 4.30 in the morning. No one minded rising early for a rollicking good time! They were really fun days, excuses for having a really good time...
The Medieval chapel of St. Andrew that preceded St. Anne's had three chantries used by the Guild of Corvesers (basket makers) and one by the Guild of Cordwainers (shoe makers). Members of such guilds would combine to promenade their dramatised biblical story on decorated wagons around the town, performing at particular popular venues.
The Coventry Cycle lists some of the guilds processing through the town:

In performing Noye's Fludde children of Bewdley schools will be following a centuries old tradition. They deserve a good audience.

This is a wonderful result in view of the difficult economic climate. So very many thanks to all of you who support the stall at the back of St. Anne's by buying the Fairtrade goods and by selling them when you're on duty. I couldn't do it without you all. Please keep up your support in 2012 and if you've not thought about it before please do some of your shopping from the stall. If everyone bought a few things regularly it would make a huge difference to our producer partners in some of the poorest countries of the world.
